چکیده

Introduction: Strongly modulating pulses (SMP) [1] have been used to homogenize tissue flip angle (FA) on upper legs at 3 T. The muscle and fat tissues were discriminated in the pulse design algorithm via their resonance frequencies to achieve different flip angles. For a given TR, by implementing the respective nominal Ernst angles of the two different tissues in a spoiled gradient recalled echo (GRE) sequence, a higher signal for both tissues in addition to a better signal uniformity can be in principle obtained. After measuring the B1 and ΔB0 maps to generate the corresponding 2D histogram, a strongly modulating pulse with Ernst angles of 19° (for muscle) and 37° (for fat) was designed (TR=80 ms [2]). The pulse was then inserted in a GRE sequence and its performance was compared with the one of a strong hard pulse with nominal flip angle equal to 19°. Measurements of the FA when using the SMP were also performed to confirm the theory.

Slab selective, regularized RF shimming

Introduction RF shimming is a well-known technique, where amplitudes and phases of a transmit RF coil array are optimized to obtain a homogeneous B1 profile, i.e., to compensate wave propagation effects at main fields of 3T or above (see, e.g., [1]). Among other anatomies, legs are particularly prone to wave propagation effects due to their bi-cylindrical geometry, resulting in significant sign...

Enhanced Slab Selective Brain Imaging at 3T using Wide Band Tailored RF pulses

Introduction T1 weighted brain imaging at 3T for both clinical and neuroscience applications is often done using slab selective MPRAGE [1] sequences that provide flexible 3D coverage. RF field (B1) non-uniformity is an inherent problem for high field MRI and for this type of sequence results in variable image contrast. In order to compensate for this, various B1 inhomogeneity mitigating RF puls...

Reduction of transmitter B1 inhomogeneity with transmit SENSE slice-select pulses.

Parallel transmitter techniques are a promising approach for reducing transmitter B1 inhomogeneity due to the potential for adjusting the spatial excitation profile with independent RF pulses. These techniques may be further improved with transmit sensitivity encoding (SENSE) methods because the sensitivity information in pulse design provides an excitation that is inherently compensated for tr...

A fat suppressed adiabatic T2-preparation module for 3T

Background A recently developed T2-preparation module for cardiac imaging at high field is insensitive to B0 and B1 inhomogeneity, cardiac motion and flow. Obtained T2 weighted images exhibit bright fat signal that can obscure the signal of myocardium and other muscles. Therefore, a chemical selective saturation (CHESS) is usually applied for fat suppression after the T2-preparation, e.g. in co...

A simple and analytical way to correct for ΔB0 inhomogeneity in the evaluation of B1 maps relying on flip angle measurements and non-selective square pulses

Introduction: Efficient mitigation of the radiofrequency (RF) inhomogeneity at high field using coil arrays relies on the accurate knowledge of the individual B1 maps. Based on these maps, algorithms using diverse k-space trajectories can return RF waveforms which homogenize the flip angle (FA). The algorithms initially aimed at counteracting the B1 inhomogeneity only [1, 2], until the spatial ...
